Disasters often leave people vulnerable, and scammers are quick to take advantage. By understanding the tactics they use, you can take steps to help protect yourself and your business from becoming a victim.

Posing as reputable organizations such as FEMA or the American Red Cross, scammers promise financial aid in exchange for sensitive details like Social Security numbers or banking information.

Some unethical law firms exploit disaster victims by promising large settlements while charging hidden fees or using aggressive tactics.

Fake charities often emerge during disasters, pressuring individuals to donate through untraceable methods like gift cards or cryptocurrency, or through “instant payment” platforms like person-to-person payment apps or wire transfers. These scammers rely on urgency and emotional appeals to trap their victims.

Emails and messages claiming to provide disaster updates or aid frequently include malicious links or attachments, aiming to steal your personal or financial data.

Fraudsters may impersonate insurance providers or utility companies, demanding immediate payments to avoid service interruptions or policy cancellations.

  • Verify Communications: Always confirm the identity of anyone contacting you on behalf of a bank, government agency or charity by reaching out through official channels.
  • Guard Sensitive Information: Never share personal details like usernames, passwords, or authentication codes over unsolicited calls, emails or texts.
  • Check Charities Before Donating: Use resources like CharityNavigator.org or GuideStar.org to verify organizations. If you choose to donate, go directly to the charity’s official website.
  • Monitor Financial Activity: Regularly review your bank and credit card statements for unauthorized transactions and report any suspicious activity promptly.

If you suspect fraudulent activity, take immediate action:
